As your State Representative, I will continue my work to fully fund our public schools, protect our environment and work for the interests of children, families and seniors across Washington. For more information, you can visit the official legislative website to see the complete list of bills that I have sponsored and track their progress.
Education

One third of our state budget is spent on K-12 education, and our State Constitution declares public education to be the “paramount duty” of state government. Despite this, public schools still need our help. As the parent of two young children who will attend Seattle Public Schools I am personally committed to building a world class education system. As your State Representative, I will work to fully fund K-12 education so that school districts are receiving the funds they need to educate our kids. I support hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes and systemic reforms that will help enable all children to receive a quality education. Further, we must strengthen our investment in our colleges and universities to maintain quality, affordability and accessibility. It is important that students of all ages, whether it is a recent high school graduate or a mid-career person pursuing new skills, can attend quality institutions right here at home.

Environment
We are very fortunate to live in a state with such natural splendor, but we must take positive action if we are to preserve our environment for future generations. As your State Representative, I will fight for more funding for the Puget Sound Partnership and to implement the forthcoming Action Agenda to restore this critical ecosystem. I will work to strengthen our environmental laws to provide incentives for new clean technologies and to make our State a global leader in combating climate change. As your Representative, I will work to strengthen our growth management laws to protect our forests and farmlands, while providing incentives and options for smarter growth in our urban areas. Looking to Eastern Washington, our State must demand that the federal government clean up the radioactive waste at Hanford and prevent our state from becoming a national nuclear waste dump.

Transportation

As the population of our state grows, our traffic congestion continues to intensify. We need an integrated approach to moving people and goods that considers the needs of neighborhoods, our economy, and the impact on the environment. As your State Representative, I am working for cost-effective investments in our transportation infrastructure that will help improve our mobility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. I support expanding our light rail system, increased METRO bus service, and more investments in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. During my first term in office I have been a leader in the effort to ensure that the 520 Bridge replacement project has improved transit capacity, minimizes impacts on local neighborhoods and the arboretum, and is completed both on time and within budget.

Healthcare

Everyone deserves access to affordable health care. While the passage of the historic federal health care reform law in 2010 marks significant progress on this complicated issue, there is still much work to do before we will be able to provide care to all citizens. During my first term in office, and in the face of a large budget deficit, I fought to fund Apple Health for Kids and The Basic Health Plan. As your State Representative, I will work to ensure that the federal reforms are implemented in Washington state and that every child in Washington has access to quality care. Whether it is lowering the cost of prescription drugs or incentives that help small- and medium-sized businesses offer affordable healthcare coverage to their employees, I will work for health care for all.
Economic Prosperity and Jobs
A strong economy helps provide the living wage jobs and the tax revenues for a healthy society. As the most trade dependent state in the nation, we must “think globally and act locally” when it comes to economic development programs. Further, we must ensure that economic gains actually benefit Washington’s working families and not just out of state corporations. As your State Representative, I will work to maintain a healthy business climate in our state that benefits everyone. I will fight for the rights of our workers and support economic development incentives for local businesses. I will work to address inequities in the current business and occupational (B & O) tax structure, and the elimination of tax loopholes for companies that move jobs out of state.
Budget

Whether it is an operating or capital budget, it is important to understand that the budget is policy. In other words, when a critical program or project receives funding, it can make a huge difference in the lives of people; when funds for specific programs are cut, people can be left behind. As your State Representative, I will keep a sharp eye to make sure that your tax dollars support a balanced budget which benefits the children, seniors and working families in our state.
Civil Rights
I believe that everyone is entitled to equal protection under the law. As a nation and as a state, we have slowly made progress in this area… but there is still much work to do. As your State Representative, I will support marriage equality and work to make sure that all are treated equally under the law.
