6th September 2010

Dear Supporter,

As a parent of two children who will attend Seattle Public Schools, as a graduate of public schools and universities in our state, and as a teacher at the UW, I'm very concerned about the future of public education.  A quality, accessible and affordable public education is a cornerstone of any free and healthy society.  With so much at stake, please know that I am personally committed to building a world class education system in Washington state that benefits everyone!

Basic Education - K-12 Schools Need Our Help!  One third of our state budget is spent on K-12 education, and our State Constitution declares public education to be the "paramount duty" of state government.  Despite this, public schools still need our help... and I refused to stand on the sidelines!

I've gone to Olympia as a volunteer to lobby for more funding for our public schools, including Class Size Reduction (HB2458), Teacher Compsensation Reform, and the Local Farms/Healthy Kids Bill (HB2798) to provide fresher products for our school lunch rooms.  In 2007, I served on the Steering Committee and coordinated literature distribution for the successful "Simple Majority" ballot measure that now allows local school levies in our state to pass with a simple majority vote (50%+1).

As your State Representative, I will continue the fight for more funding in the K-12 system.  I will support hiring more teachers to reduce class sizes and increasing teacher salaries so they can live in the community where they teach.  I will work to secure funds for full-time Kindergarten and replace the failed WASL with more appropriate performance measurements.  I will call for a review of state educational transporation policies because our kids should be able to get to and from school in a safe and efficient manner.

Higher Education - Maintain Quality and Affordability.  We are very fortunate in Washington State to have a public system of higher education that is among the best in the country.  Our universities and community colleges help train and prepare people of all ages for important jobs in our community.  Further, our research universities play a critical role in discovering new cures for disease, advances in cutting-edge technologies and fostering economic development in our state.

As your State Representative, I will lead the charge to invest in our public universities and community colleges.  I will work to increase pay for instructors and reduce class sizes.  We must keep tuition affordable and improve access so that our kids can attend quality institutions right here at home!

As your State Representative, I will work with parents, teachers, students, administrators and my legislative colleagues to ensure that we achieve our goal of a world class education system that is accessible and affordable to everyone.

Thank you!  Our grassroots campaign has an important message to get out to the voters of the 46th legislative district--a message about local, community values, and a proven record of leadership and public service.

Thank you so much for your support to elect new leadership to represent north Seattle in the State Legislature.  Again, if you have any questions about my campaign, please contact me directly at scott.white46@comcast.net or by phone at 206-310-7970.

I look forward to working with you and representing you in Olympia!

PS -- The 46th District Nomination Convention is this Thursday, May 15th.  I ask for your vote and support on Thursday!
